The Key Difference: Extra costs a bit more, but vastly expands your choices

Extra is the second tier in the new dining plan lineup.

It includes everything covered by Essential but brings even more restaurants to the table, especially buffets. In total, Extra unlocks 25 dining locations, compared to Essential’s 18.

So the real question isn't just "Does Extra have more restaurants?", but rather: Do the additional restaurants justify paying the price difference for your entire stay?

Which restaurants do you unlock by upgrading from Essential to Extra?

Extra opens the doors to spectacular spots like:

• PYM Kitchen
• Restaurant Agrabah Café
• Disney Newport Bay Club buffets
• Disney Sequoia Lodge buffets

Plus, it significantly expands your total table-service and buffet options compared to Essential.

And here is the golden rule: if none of these restaurants are on your wishlist, you probably don't need to upgrade to Extra. But if you plan on visiting a few of them, the price jump starts making a lot of sense.

So, when does Extra actually pay off?

When you want to enjoy several of the additional buffets. This is where Extra truly shines.

The four premium buffets it adds run about €45 per adult out of pocket, while the 1-meal Extra voucher costs €42.

This means if you use your voucher at these specific spots, you are getting phenomenal value and even pocketing a little savings.

However, if you upgrade to Extra but end up using most of your vouchers on quick-service meals, you won't be getting your money's worth.

How does it compare to Essential?

This is the comparison that truly matters.

Imagine your heart is set on dining at:

• PYM Kitchen
• Restaurant Agrabah Café
• One of the Newport Bay Club buffets
• One of the Sequoia Lodge buffets

With Essential, these locations simply aren't included in the standard lineup.

With Extra, they are. In this scenario, paying €10 more per adult, per night makes complete sense because you are unlocking the exact experiences you want to enjoy.

But if your dining wishlist looks more like this:

• Quick service
• Hotel Santa Fe buffet
• Hotel Cheyenne buffet

...then Essential already covers your every need.

It makes no sense to pay for Extra just to "have more options" if you aren't actually going to use them.

A quick example: A family of 4 staying for 4 nights

Let's picture a family with:

• 2 adults
• 2 children
• a 4-night stay
• booking the 1-meal-per-night plan

With Essential they would pay:
€96 per night → €384 total

With Extra they would pay:
€126 per night → €504 total

The difference is: €120 more for the entire stay. So the real question is: Are the additional restaurants you want to visit worth that extra €120 to you?

If the Extra plan lets you use your vouchers at several buffets or spots you were going to pay out of pocket for anyway, it absolutely pays off. If you are only going to visit one of them, it might not.

What about Extra with 2 meals per night?

Once again, you have to crunch the numbers before deciding.

This plan costs €80 per adult, per night—meaning €40 per meal. That works beautifully if both of your daily meals have a menu value close to that amount.

But if one of your meals ends up being a €20 quick-service bite and the other is a €45 buffet, you'd be looking at €65 out of pocket compared to the €80 you paid for the plan. On a day like that, the 2-meal Extra plan doesn't work in your favor.

That’s why, even though the cost per voucher drops when you choose 2 meals, it doesn't automatically mean you are going to save more money.

Extra might be your perfect match if...

• You want to experience multiple buffets during your stay;

• PYM Kitchen or Agrabah Café are absolute must-dos;

• You are staying at Newport Bay Club or Sequoia Lodge and want the convenience of dining right at your hotel;

• Essential falls a bit short for your tastes, but you aren't interested in the high-end Signature restaurants;

• You want a wider variety of dining choices without jumping to the top tiers.

Extra probably isn't for you if...

• You plan on eating mostly quick-service meals;

• Your favorite restaurants are already fully covered by Essential;

• You are only interested in visiting one of the Extra-exclusive spots;

• You plan on dining outside the Disney bubble for several meals.

What if you want to dine at a Signature spot or with Disney Characters one day?

You absolutely can! Even if you have the Extra plan, you can book a higher-tier restaurant and, in many cases, use your voucher for its monetary value to lower your bill, paying the difference out of pocket. This also applies to magical Disney Character Dining experiences.
